Public buses are one of the vital means of transportation that people in Bangkok depend on every day, however, the system of using buses has barely changed over the decade. We could say that it was outdated when compared to other countries. A lot of people always complain about the bus that they can’t catch in time or they have no idea when the bus is going to come. Some have to wait over an hour for the bus to come. The time the bus will arrive is inconsistent due to the heavy traffic in Bangkok, people can’t really plan the right time if they want to use the bus. The developers of “ViaBus” wanted to solve those problems and create a better experience for people who use buses in Bangkok.
Via bus is an application that tracks the bus and other public transport in Thailand in real-time. With slogan making transportation reliable, people will know when the bus is going to arrive so they can have more time to do something else instead of just waiting without knowing when the bus is going to arrive. Via bus wants the user to feel “hopeful” during their wait.
“Intouch Marsvongpragorn” is the CEO of Via Bus. He graduated from the faculty of engineering at Chulalongkorn University. Intouch and his team spent 2 years developing this application during their study. The beginning of Via Bus started from Intouch and missed the shuttle bus in Chulalongkorn University which made him late for class, he felt that there should be some kind of information to let him know when the bus is going to come. Then he started to develop the application “Chula Pop Bus” which allows people to know when the Shuttle bus is going to arrive. Things turned out a bit unexpected. Not only students or staff used the app but many people who live or work nearby the university used it too. This finding led him to think that this idea could scale to other public transport too. So, Intouch decided to focus on improving the travel experience for ordinary people and to ensure that people who rely on public transport never needlessly miss the bus again.
Some people don’t even know that when the bus can take them to their destination and when it going to arrive. That information already exists but very few people know about it or have access to, ViaBus want to be that medium that connects people with the service that already there. If people can plan how they going to travel more easily, the will have a better quality of life.
Via Bus got a lot of help from the government sector, with the support from CU Innovation Hub VisBus was able to develop their first version in 2558, They also got the support from AIS and Bangkok Mass Transit Authority through the connection of faculty of engineering Chulalongkorn University. First, they test the application with 70 buses that lots of people are using and beta testers of about 2000 people. After they receive feedback from the user, they expand the scale of the application to about 2500 buses that Viabus can track them.
The next step for ViaBus is to cover every form of transportation in Thailand. Intouch wants to improve the travel experience in every area of Thailand. ViaBus also has an English version to support tourism.
